What a trash opinion. Low time commitment, low pressure environ allowing the femotype to consider it just friendly if she has no interest and let's you not be stuck in it as long if it's not good. If the coffee date goes well, you can invite the interested party to continue hanging out and go do something else (pro tip: the contemporary art museum is free for students)

the problem with coffee dates is that they're boring and don't last long enough. Also usually in the morning-noon, which isn't very conductive dating time.

I would place them below drinks, activity (arcade, bowling, etc), museum, and dinner in terms of effectiveness. The only great think about them is low cost.

in their defense, I think they’re good for first dates specifically because it’s a really chill environment. For later dates I think you’re right, but I prefer when first dates are more chill

Basically this, first dates should give a chance to talk and hang out casually without a large commitment from either party. Especially if it's a first date with someone you don't know very well, why would you want to force an hour (meal) of time together when neither of you are sure this is worth continuing? Drinks can be more intimidating due to the existent rate of date-rape especially in relation to alcohol. Museum and activity really take the focus away from finding out if you're compatible. It may be intimidating for some shy people to just sit and chat with a cute someone, but you have to be able to talk to each other if you want it to go anywhere, right? While it may be boring (>>10219) after you are already in a relationship with the person, shouldn't spending time learning about someone you may care for be engaging enough?
